Soundproofing Procedure

Allocate a day, maybe a weekend.

Stage 1:

  1. Remove dog house, and virtually everything inside that will come out.
  2. Remove inner doghouse (engine cover).
  3. Remove driver's side heat duct. (Gee, I seem to remember removing the dash to get that one out!)
  4. Remove the sheet metal cover on the bottom of the windshield frame over the motor. Yea, the nuts/bolts are a bear.
  5. Inject foam on both ends of the channel where the defrost duct is. A long foam extension helps greatly. Watch--when you see foam coming out of strange places clean it up while still wet--once dryed it is a PITA to clean up.
  6. 6. Stuff fiberglass around the defrost duct over the engine. (Don't foam this section).
  7. 7. Use sound deading material (Dynamat for example) and cover the bottom (side facing the engine) of the sheet metal cover. Cut out screw holes.
  8. Stuff fiberglass into areas that are not foamed but will be covered.
  9. Reinstall sheet metal cover.
  10. Tape over any holes in windshield frame (there are a bunch of them!) Use MIL spec duct tape, not that crappy silver stuff.
  11. Reassemble your heat duct, dash, engine cover, and items removed.
  12. Reinstall doghouse.
You'll notice the difference.

Stage 2:

  1. Remove dog house, and engine cover.
  2. Dynamat the outside (engine side) of the engine cover.
  3. Reinstall as necessary.

Stage 3:

Insulate the underside of the tunnel. Especially around the shifter, transmission, and areas forward of the rear seats.

Stage 4:

Insulate the drivers and passenger's side kick panels up to the windshield frame with Dynamat or other material (spray stuff may work better, but be careful of over spray.

Stage 5:

Insulate the roof. Pay particular attention to the forward corners. Insulate from the windshield back to the B pillar at least. If heat is an issue (you are in the south) insulate the entire roof for a cooler ride.

Stage 6:

Insulate the area under and around the CITS pump/washer bottle. Insulate the area below/inside the air intakes on passenger's side.

Stage 7:

Insulate all exposed sheet metal on the body that is not exposed to the outside (engine compartment, tunnel, wheel wells, etc. Make sure there are no holes such as the holes left when you remove your cargo tie down loops for example. Reinstall your drain holes.

Now...

Your hummer should be about as quiet as an Alpha--mine is! I can talk without raising my voice and my wife only has to yell at me in a reasonably loud voice (which is true even when not in the Hummer!!!)
