Cheap Side-Mirror Replacements:

These mirrors cost $5 compared to $500 for a stock replacement. They are convex and 5 inches in diameter. They dramatically improve front side window visibility. I pulled the remote mirror cable from the inside (which gets hung up on things and pulled off on trails if just taped to the side of the vehicle with mirrors off). The brackets are just 3/8 steel that is twisted. These mirrors are quickly removed when needed.

Those stock and High visibility mirrors are really nice BUT:

  1. They are so tall and obstruct the side window visability terribly.

  2. They are still so wide - with that huge pivot and arm.

  3. Even when you take them off for the trails -- you can't get that stupid control wire off without taking the door panel off and disconnecting the wire from the inside and pull it through. I nearly ripped the wire out of the door one time when a tree grabbed the wire that was tapped to the door.

  4. They weigh a ton.

Anyhow, I took the mirrors off before I pulverized them both (worth 4-500 greens each I am told). Pulled the wires through. Filled the wire hole and the non vertical old bracket screw hole with caulk. Made up a bracket -1 x 3/16 x 8 inch high metal strip. Put a 90 degree bend 4 1/2 inches from the bottom. Drilled the holes for the mount to the door hinge and one hole for the mirror.

Got a Rally 4 1/2 convex mirror --painted black-for 5 dollars each and mounted. If you really want to get extravagant, Autumn makes a 5 1/2 mirror for 6 dollars.

Now you have much more side forward vision. The mirrors come off with 2 slotted screws per side in a few seconds. If you smash one, you don't have to take out a loan out to buy new ones. The stock mirrors stick out 9 inches each so you have gained about 6 inches in width when they are on. AMG's 85.5 width does not include the mirrors sticking out.

These mirrors are convex and give High Visibility...not so good in judging distance--need the rear view for that.

What is the hot setup is the a cheap rearview video--Eddie has some units but it is not cheap, although the components are.
