Radiators and Cooling Systems

Chris said:

I know this radiator service was mentioned before, but I need advice on how to flush my radiator...ie tips, how-to's etc..etc...Anyone care to divulge on this again? Also has anyone thought of putting an "aftermarket" thermostat in, claiming to gain more HP??

Thanks!

..Chris

Open the radiator drain petcock and drain out as much as you can. Then I flush out the engine by filling it completely with water. I run the engine with the radiator cap off and the drain plug open while running water into the radiator until all the antifreeze is all flushed out. Turn on the heater during this whole process so the coolant in the heater core gets flushed. Then let all the water you can drain out. Close up the drain plug. If the cooling system capacity is 26 qts then pour in about 3.5 to 4 gallons of antifreeze and top off with water if needed. Run the engine with the radiator cap off and continue to top off. Fill the overflow with a 50-50 mixture. Recap the radiator and run the truck until its at operating temp. The overflow will usually draw down a few times so keep replenishing it. Check it after a few days. Thats all there is to it.

Good luck
