Dropping (Removing) the Oil Pan:

I will be dropping the oil pan tomorrow (UCP removed already) in order to tap the pan for my Oil temp gauge.... I have a couple of questions:

  1) There is a line that is on the Driver side of the pan that leads up to the engine compartment... How do i remove this line?

The dipstick tube? Bolted to a bracket at the top of engine, press-fit into the oil pan's corresponding part.

  2) When reinstalling the pan Is there a Gasket i should use or should I just use some Black RTV sealant?

Get an oil pan gasket set.

Also should I replace the engine oil pan rear seal also?

Pan seal? Yes, part of that gasket set. There is a front one too! Rear engine crank seal? No, not if it is not leaking.

  3) Any idea what size, the Bolt for the engine oil pan is (#24)? How about the Engine oil stud (#30) and the size of the screws for the oil pan itsself (#29)?

Planning on losing some? Reuse the old ones.

Suggestion, follow the book. It says take off the exhaust Y pipe, right? Well it should say that! It is moderately difficult to get the pan off with the Y pipe on the vehicle. It is extremely difficult to get it back on!

The lines that run up to the front are the oil cooler lines......you shouldn't have to mess with those to drop the pan. The pan bolts are a 10mm head if IIRC. Get the Fel-Pro pan gasket set...It includes the front and rear valley pieces.....available from Checker/Schucks/Kragen...not expensive.

I believe the starter has to be removed as well.....

Starter, transmission torque converter cover plate, UCP, oil filter and adapter (makes it easier), oil dip stick tube (makes it easier!). Always take a few pictures or drawings of which bolts and studs come from where, a few are longer (hold brackets, such as the starter power cable bracket), or slightly different.

Having a lift is a major help but it can be done flat on the ground, though wear eye protection--dripping oil in the eyes is a bad thing.

Clean the old pan well, use very hot water and Dawn dish washing detergent after wiping out as much as possible with paper towels. Clean the outside and inside carefully. Clean the mating surfaces well too, and inspect the block's mating surface for gasket bits and crap. Shine a light and inspect both the block and everything in the engine's bottom end.

Check the condition of the oil pickup screen, if any crud is noted either clean or replace as necessary.

Triple check all bolts if you remove the screen or oil pump, loosing a bolt on the oil pump will result in pain at a later date.
