Diagnosing the No. 8 Cylinder Problem:

Symptoms:

  • Tiny black specks of carbon in your coolant reservoir.

  • White smoke

  • Engine missing/running rough

  • Water from the exhaust pipe

  • Heater not working

  • Engine running at 160 instead of 200

  • Low coolant light

If you can, do a pressure test over night. If you have a leak, this will probably lock the engine.

I attended a HUMMER Club event last month and had a long talk with both HUMMER techs from AMG (both have been working on HUMMERs since 1992). There is a vin number that anything after is "safe".

The #8 cylinder problem starts with late 1996 models. It turns out that the concern ends in 2000.

Any Vin Numbers after this number are NOT at Risk:

VIN # 137ZA9037YE188469
