"Check Engine" Light:

Our beast stalled at a stop light while my wife was driving it. She thought she had run out of fuel. swapped tanks and it restarted after stalling a couple of times. Both tanks were low.

First check to see if your lift pump is running normally when the key is turned on and while cranking. If it is, then look at the colored metal tag on the injection pump and see if it's blue or green. There were problems with the early injection pumps on '96 models. The engine would run and die, buck while driving and set fault codes. You need a scan tool to pull codes from the memory records of the computer.

You could have just run low enough on fuel to get air in the system also, in which case the light would go out after a few restarts.
