Accessories/Winches/Rated Pull:

The rated pull for most electric winches reduces by about 10% for each layer (or wrap) of cable on the drum. This is a "rule of thumb", not the exact number (which varies with each winch and cable diameter).

The pull is a function of the effective diameter of the drum (which increases if there are more layers of cable on it). The actual length of the cable has no effect on the pull.

I just thought I'd elaborate that having a longer winch cable reduces your pulling ability for short pulls because you are more wraps up on the winch. If you do need maximum pull for a short distance, it's better to hook to something farther away or use a pulley to both double your pulling strength and get those extra wraps off the winch.
