Tuning a CB Antenna:

I'm installing a CB in a 2000 Wagon. I'm having problems tuning the antenna. I cannot get the SWR below 3:1 on any channel. I'm guessing it's because I don't have a good ground. My antenna is on top of an Adventure roof rack. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

If your best is 3:1, do check your coax for damage. That's way too high (as you know).

Which antenna are you using? I've a Firestick on my rear bumper and it works fine there. (I had a full length whip, but it was always hitting things like lights in parking garages, bank drive throughs, etc.)

It would be best if you ran a ground strap from the antenna to the roof rack to the roof. I know, you are saying "A hole in my roof?" But, no one will see it, and if you are careful it won't leak. I'd guess that is one of the bigger problems in your installation.

I needed to get a CB for the Grayling snow run earlier this year. After reading the countless messages about grounding problems I bought a $40 groundless antenna advertised for campers/RVs/boats/non-metallic vehicles. I'm at .7 SWR on all the channels and have no problem sending or receiving on the trails.

I'm not a radio expert so I'm not sure if I've lost any range in doing this but it sure made for a nice easy install.
